Community Involvement
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
—Margaret Mead
Walter has been actively involved in a program called Music and Memory. He works with high school students through Rotary International Interact to provide personalized music to patients in nursing homes. The students contact the families of the nursing home patients, load the patient’s favorite type of music onto iPods and present them to the patients, via an iPod and headphones or an iPod speaker.
Music has been proven to have an extraordinary effect on the elderly, especially those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The patients are more alert, more physically active and much more verbal after listening to music after just a few minutes. Walter’s involvement with Music and Memory has helped to raise over $1000 in just a few presentations. The funds help to buy the iPods, speaker docks and music for the patients.
